The CV90 MkIV Infantry Fighting Vehicle is the latest version of the BAE Systems CV90 series, who describe the vehicle as a 5th generation Infantry Fighting Vehicle. It was unveiled in 2018 at the International Armoured Vehicles Conference in London and has since entered service with two European nations.

The CV90 or rather Combat Vehicle 90, is the name generally given to the series of export models developed on the Swedish Strf 9040 Infantry Fighting Vehicle.

These export models have continued to evolve in Marks aka Mk, seeing improvements in protection, firepower and mobility as well as their digital architecture.

The MkIV is the latest Mark of the CV90 series and has significant improvements in all areas exceeding the level of upgrades in previous Marks.

The MkIV features a new 1000hp Scania diesel engine and X300 transmission. The increased power-to-weight ratio affords the MkIV and additional 3 tonnes of payload capability with no loss of mobility in comparison to the Mk III as well as increased off-road speed, which has been achieved through new dampeners.

In 2020, BAE Systems completed successful trials of the Israeli Spike-LR Anti Tank Guided Missile. This was completed using a dual firing pod with a retractable arm for x2 ATGM on the right side of the turret.

In addition to the new future proofed digital architecture, new Commanders Independent Sight, BAE had also completed successful trials and integration of the Israeli Elbit Systems’ Iron Fist Active Protection System in 2019.

D-Series Turret

With the MkIV being unveiled in 2018, BAE Systems went on to develop a new turret, the D-Series. Unveiled in September 2021, it features both an integrated Spike-LR dual ATGM launcher, a 50mm calibre chain gun, Iron Fist Active Protection System and even features Artificial Intelligence at the core of its digital architecture, bringing new capabilities to the MkIV. Since its development, the turrets ATGM system has been tested with the French Akeron ATGM (formerly MMP) and video footage has shown a drone being launched for target detection.

The D-Series turret is not only available for newly manufactured CV90 vehicles, but can be installed on earlier Mark CV90 as part of a mid-life upgrade package.

Czech Republic

246 new CV90 MkIV ordered in 2023. Expected delivery date unknown.

The Royal Netherlands Army as part of a $500 Million mid-life upgrade package have purchased the the D-Series turret, which includes Iron Fist and Spike-LR ATGM. Its not clear if they will be retaining the 35mm chain gun currently in service or the new 50mm.

Slovakia placed an order for 152 Mk IV in December 2022.
