Introduction

The BMP-3M Manul Infantry Fighting Vehicle is another prototype (4th generation) based on the BMP-3M Infantry Fighting Vehicle. It has seen extensive modifications and was first unveiled at the Russian Defence Expo "Army 2020" in a line of modified BMP-3 models and prototypes.

Background

The Russian Army has operated the BMP series of Infantry Fighting Vehicles since the 1960’s and have produced thousands in three main series. The most recent is the BMP-3, which is still in production (2024).

Since the 2010’s there have been a number of prototypes based on the BMP-3 to meet the requirements for a new Infantry Fighting Vehicle to replace older BMP series vehicles, despite the development of the T-15 Armata and Kurganets-25.

These prototype vehicles have offered the benefits or a reduced price tag, off the shelf design, cost savings in parts and training as the BMP-3 is already in service as an alternative to purchasing the expensive T-15 Armata and Kurganets-25, which of 2024 has not yet entered service.

The BMP-3M Manul (2022) is in essence an updated BMP-3M Dragun (which was seen for the first time in 2016) and features the same Bumerang-BM unmanned turret as used on the T-15 Armata and Kurganets-25. This required a new turret ring mounted on the hull roof.

The lack of a turret basket generates additional space in the infantry compartment, with the turret being operated remotely at the new gunners station.

In a 2023 press release, Rostec (the manufacturers state owned holding company) implied that the Manul was to enter service as the new 4th generation IFV for the Russian Army and would feature a new more powerful engine, despite the Russian Army accepting the B-19 into service as of 2021.

Firepower

Developed by KBP Instrument Design Bureau, the Bumerang-BM unmanned turret it is fitted with both a Commanders and Gunners sight with multi-channels (Day/Thermal), tracking capability and the ability to fire ATGM in fast succession to destroy ERA with a second missile to penetrator the exposed armour.

The primary weapon is the 2A42 30mm auto-cannon with a coaxial 7.62mm Machine Gun. Its Anti-Tank Capability is a pod mounted on both sides of the turret, each fitted with x2 Kornet ATGM launching tubes. The turret stores 550 rounds of ammunition and has dual feeds so is capable of firing 30mm AP and HEI rounds.
