Introduction

The B-19 Infantry Fighting Vehicle is the latest upgrade of the Russian BMP-3 Infantry Fighting Vehicle that was unveiled to the public in 2021.

Background

The BMP-3 is the latest version of the BMP series of vehicles. It entered service in 1987, replacing production of the BMP-2 and as off 2024, is still in production.

At the time, it was the most heavily armed IFV in the world, featuring a x2 man turret mounting a 100mm main gun that can fire an Anti-Tank Guided Missile, with a coaxial 30mm chain gun and 7.62mm Machine Gun as well as x2 bow-mounted machine guns.

The Russian Army has had a need to develop new Infantry Fighting Vehicles to replace older BMP’s. Since the 2010’s and the appearance of the T-15 Armata and Kurganets-25, a number of converted BMP-3 prototypes as well as retrofitted with unmanned turrets have appeared at Russian defence expo’s.

These vehicles have offered the benefits or a reduced price tag, off the shelf design, cost savings in parts and training as the BMP-3 is already in service as an alternative to purchasing the expensive T-15 Armata and Kurganets-25, which of 2024 is to enter service.

The B-19 is one of these BMP-3 retrofitted with an unmanned turret, the Epokha.

Initially trialled in 2019, a number of B-19 contributed to the Zapad-2021 drills, which is a joint strategic exercise between the armed forces of the Russiab and Belarus, which took place from 10 to 15 September 2021. The vehicle was reported as providing infantry fire support, rather than describing it as an Infantry Fighting Vehicle.

In 2020 Janes reported that the Russian Ministry of Defence’s TV Zvezda had said that the Russian Army was to receive the B-19 with the Epokha unmanned turret.

Since the Zapad 2021 exercise, a single vehicle with additional modular armour along the hull sides has been on display at the Russian defence expo “Army 2022”.

Vehicle Layout

The B-19 on display at Army 2022 had not had its Bow Machine Guns removed, which are operated by the embarked infantry. The Epokha turret does not require a basket like the original 2 man turret and generates additional space in the infantry compartment, with the turret being operated remotely at the new gunners station.

The Epokha is a more recent Unmanned Turret System. It can quickly be identified by the lack of a muzzle break on the end of the main gun, which is a 57mm calibre.

The turret features x4 Kornet-EM Anti-Tank Guided Missiles. An improved version of the Kornet, it offers greater range. It also features a third ATGM launcher containing x8 Bulat missiles.
