Introduction

The VTS-1 Tank is not a real tank, but rather a modified vehicle used as a test bed for new firing systems of a potential replacement of the West German Leopard 1 Medium Battle Tank in the 1970's. This is evident by the lack of a turret.

Background

After cancellation of the joint American MBT-70 Project, West Germany was still seeking a replacement of the Leopard 1 Medium Battle Tank. During the 1970’s, a number of development projects were started by West German companies. One of these companies was Thyssen-Henschel.

Their design featured the same L7 105mm main gun as used on the Leopard 1, but also featured an autoloader and required a test platform to conduct trials of this new gun and autoloader layout.

The company used a turret less Marder 1 Infantry Fighting Vehicle, which had their infantry firing ports capped over, which was designated VTS-1.

The vehicle featured a new roof platform/structure and cradle, which supported the complete gun and breach systems, which had to be manually loaded by a member of the companies development team.

Other small changes saw the addition of two crew cupolas. It lacked any sophisticated fire control as this wasn’t required, nor the autoloader.

The project was ended prior to acceptance into service of the Leopard 2 Main Battle Tank as the Leopard 1’s replacement. The VTS-1 is part of the Defense Technology Study Collection (WTS) in Koblenz.
