The Vickers Mk 2 Tank was a proposed design based on feedback from the Indian Army on the Vickers Mk 1 Tank. The vehicle did not make it off the design boards, but some elements of the design were carried forward to the Vickers Mk 3 Tank, which did enter mass production.

UK Defence Company Vickers had had a great deal of success with their first post war, fully indigenous designed and manufactured Vickers Mk 1 tank, selling it to Kuwait and licensed production in India, with over 2000 tanks produced.

With the Mk 1 lacking any significant armour protection, the Mk 2 proposed a new turret shape with out a main gun mantlet to provide addition protection. Additional attention was paid to the hull to deflect the blast from land mines.

Other feedback centred around the Mk 1’s mobility. The L60 main engine was underpowered, so an improved version that generated 700 bhp was proposed, which was an improvement of 165 bhp. Other changes were made to the rear track assembly and the tracks were widened to reduce ground pressure.

Whilst the L7 105mm main gun was still very potent, the design proposed the addition of British Swingfire Anti-Tank Missile launchers. Wire guided, these would give the Mk 2 the ability to engage enemy tanks at ranges of 4km’s.

A launcher was mounted on both side of the turret, with each launcher containing x2 missiles. These were folded down when the tank was on the move and set to an open angle of 30 degrees when firing. Vickers notes state that an additional x4 spare missiles could be stored in the turret in an unspecified location.

Optional equipment included a Nuclear, Biological, Chemical filtration system, Infra Red Searchlight and filters for the Driver, Commander and Gunner sights.
