Introduction

The Vickers/FMC VFM5 Light Tank is a former hybrid prototype featuring a Vickers turret and FMC hull from the American M8 Bulford light tank prototype. Developed for the export market in the mid-1980's it failed to attract any orders.

Background

US firm FMC Corporation had developed a light tank called the M8 Buford for the US Army Armored Gun System competition in mid-1980’s.

Vickers had developed a new turret constructed completely out of aluminium as was the M8 hull. Married together, the tank weighed barely 20 tonnes and the hull was given new contoured lines to avoid shot traps.

Combined with its low weight and Detroit turbo-charged engine, the Mk 5 could reach speeds of 72km/h. It featured a modern Fire Control System, complete with a muzzle reference system for the L7 105mm series main gun, which was fully stabilized for firing on the move.
