The T-55AGM Tank upgrade package was developed by Ukrainian company Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau for the Russian T-55 Medium Battle Tank and Chinese Type 59. The package is a significant upgrade of the T-55 design in terms of firepower, mobility and protection.

Over 88,000 T-54/T-55 medium tanks were built by Russia during the Cold War. By the time production had ended in 1981, the tank was out classed by both Western and Russian Main Battle Tanks. The T-55 remains in service (as of 2024) with over 40+ countries, many of them being less affluent nations who can not afford expensive Main Battle Tanks.

A number of defence contractors from across the globe have been developing low cost upgrade packages for the T-55 in an attempt to make the vehicle as lethal, protected and mobile as a main battle tank, but with out the price tag.

The T-55AGM was developed by KMBD sometime around 2000 for the export market. The package was marketed in the 2018 UkrOboronProm sales brochure (a state run organisation that manages the Ukrainian military industrial sector) but does not feature in their 2024 catalogue of vehicles following a lack of orders.

The upgrade package saw the replacement of the 100mm main gun with a 125mm L48 smoothbore, capable of firing all 125mm manufactured ammunition, such as armour-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS), high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT), and high explosive (HE) fragmentation (HE-FRAG) rounds as well as Anti-Tank Guided Missiles capable of hitting targets up to five kilometres.

The manufacturers promotional video stipulated that the vehicle could be fitted with an unspecified 120mm smoothbore as used commonly in NATO. Both main guns have a powered gun stabilisation for firing on the move.

Secondary weapons include a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun and a remote controlled 12.7mm machine gun mount on his copula.

The crew have been reduced from four to three, following the installation of an autoloader. The vehicle can carry a x30 round bomb load, with additional rounds stored at the rear of hull next to the engine bulkhead.

The gunner has stabilised sights for both day and night (thermal), a laser range finder and modern ballistic computer as well as guidance controls for the ATGM.

The vehicle features a modular Explosive Reactive Armour, additional armoured bulkheads for the engine compartment, a new fire detection and suppression system.

A new NBC detection and air filtration system has been installed for the crew.

A new feature for the T-55 is the installation of a soft-kill Active Protection System, which detects when a laser range finder is pointed at the vehicle, alerts the crew and launches aerosol smoke grenades to interfere with the enemy’s laser range finder from “painting” the tank.

The primary mobility upgrade of the T-55 is a new, more powerful diesel engine, which is the 850hp  5TD FM. The additional horsepower compared to the earlier engines of the T-54/55, provides increased power to weight ratio for improved acceleration and overall off-road terrain.

New tracks are installed, which feature rubber blocks. These reduce vibrations when travelling on roads, provides an increased speed, reduction of risk to electrical systems and a more comfortable journey for the crew.
