Introduction

The M60-2000 Tank (aka 120S) is a former upgrade package for the M60A3 Main Battle Tank developed by General Dynamics Land Systems and unveiled in 2001. It was a hybrid of a refurbished M60A3 hull and an M1A1 turret. Despite the upgrade reportedly being only half the purchase price of an M1A1 Main Battle Tank and interest from Middle-East M60A3 operators, the package was not purchased.

Background

A number of countries in the Middle East and around the Mediterranean have operated various M60A1 and A3 vehicles since the 1980’s. Some of these countries also operate the M1A1 Abrams. A prime example is Egypt, who have purchased/built under licence 1130 M1A1 and purchased 1827 M60A1 and A3.

The upgrade package was unveiled at the defence expo “IDEF 2001” in Turkey, who at the time were seeking an upgrade package for their M60A3’s. Turkey eventually went with the Israeli Sabre upgrade package for their Patton’s, bringing them up to the M60T standard.

Former GDLS press releases had stated that Egypt had purchased the upgrade package and would assemble them in Egypt, but the deal never went through.

The M1A1 turret featured the standard 120mm smoothbore main gun and FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared Radar) Sight for nighttime. Like all exported Abram’s, the turrets armour did not feature Depleted Uranium, relying on the original Burlington Composite for protection.

The M60A3 hull was modified to take the weight of the new, bigger turret, which included new torsion bar suspension and a more powerful engine, the 1200hp AVDS-1790 Diesel.

Despite the end user having improved armour, improved detection capability and a more lethal main gun for half the price of an M1A1, the package was never purchased and is no longer marketed on GDLS website.
