The EMBT Enhanced Main Battle Tank is a technical demonstrator developed by the joint French and German company, KNDS for the Main Ground Combat System programme.

Established in 2017, the MGCS programme is a joint program between France and Germany to develop a single design that will replace both countries respective front-line tanks. Other European countries have since expressed an interest in joining the programme as potential future operators.

The EMBT is packed with future proof technologies and features a new layout, currently not used by any other NATO main battle tank.

KMW has been the principal manufacturer of all new Leopard 2 tanks and their upgraded models for the German Army, the latest being the A8 variant. This has been developed and trialled with the German Army to meet their ongoing requirements.

Nexter (formerly GIAT) also developed and manufactured the French Leclerc Main Battle Tank. Nexter are currently updating 200 Leclerc’s for the French Army to the Leclerc XLR, which will remain in service until 2040 as set out in the armies Scorpion Program.

In 2015 both KMW and Nexter completed a merger of both companies into a new one called “KNDS” and in 2023 it was agreed both companies would appear as one single brand, KNDS.

KNDS’s first demonstrator was released at Eurosatory 2018 and was simply a Leclerc turret married to a Leopard 2 hull as a demonstration of the new companies capability’s. Their second and current demonstrator, the EMBT is a new vehicle and was unveiled in 2022.

The current EMBT features a new two man turret housing the same 120mm L52 smoothbore gun as used on the Leclerc, the CN120-26.

The EMBT turret has growth potential and is designed to use the 140mm ASCALON smoothbore. The Autoloaded and SCAlabLe Outperforming guN is designed to fire at ranges of 5,000m so will require Beyond-Line-Of-Sight ammunition.

It was reported that German company Rheinmetall were also contributing to the project as of 2019 and that their 130mm smoothbore (as used on their Panther KF51, which is being offered as a competitor to the EMBT) could be considered as an alternative for the EMBT.

The EMBT will use the existing Leclerc autoloader. Its not known what modifications (if any) will be needed to accommodate the larger 140mm ammunition. The autoloader will retain 22 rounds and a further 18 rounds in the hull.

The vehicle is equipped with an anti-drone ARX30 RCWS with a 30mm chain gun with an air-burst capability. The main gun has a .50cal coaxial machine gun and a 7.62mm machine gun built into the commander sight.

In 2022, KMW, General Dynamic Land Systems and Rafael formed a new company called EuroTrophy GmbH, who are now manufacturing the Israel Rafael Trophy Active Protection System in Germany for NATO member countries.

Trophy is a combat proven hard-kill Active Protection System that features sensors that detects incoming RPG and Anti-Tank Missile threats and launches a projectile that destroys it, preventing it from impacting on the tank.

In addition, EMBT uses the Elbit Systems Laser Warning System, which detects and alerts the crew that they are being targeted.

Other new features includes Drone detection software and sensors so that UAV’s can be engaged with the ARX30 RCW and PILAR V gun shot audio sensor. The tank has a 360 degree camera system for situational awareness around the vehicle. All this sensory information can be shared on any future battlefield management system.

To leverage the workload for the Commander from these additional systems, KNDS has added a new 4th crewman called the “System Operator” who is stationed next to the driver in the hull.

The EMBT features the latest version of the “Euro Powerpack” the German MTU 883 EPP which generates 1500hp. Its not clear what suspension the vehicle will be, but overall the vehicles weight has been reduced to 61.5 tonnes, which is 5 tonnes lighter than the latest models of the Leopard 2 and provides greater power to weight ratio too.

The vehicles top speed is 65 km/h with an operational range of just 460 km, which is somewhat lacking in comparison to the Leclerc Series 3.
