CV90105 XC-8 105HP

CV90105 XC-8 105HP

Unveiled in 2014, the CV90105 XC-8 is the second model of the CV90105 Medium Tank (as described by the manufacturer), the first being the CV90105 TML Turret.

It utilizes “off-the shelf” components, the Belgium Cockerill XC-8 105HP Turret and the Swedish BAE Systems AB (formely Hägglunds)  Strf 9040 (Combat Vehicle 90 aka CV90) hull.

It offers the flexibility to convert any Mk of the CV90 Infantry Fighting Vehicle family into a fire support vehicle with an anti-tank capability or medium tank for rapid reaction forces thanks to its 25 tonne combat weight.

CMI Defence Cockerill are most commonly known for their highly successful 90mm anti-tank gun (of which some 2,500 units have been sold), which has been installed on a multitude of fire support vehicles in several countries. In recent years the company has moved into modular turret systems, modular referring to the ability to mount different calibre main guns in the same turret.

CV90105 XC-8 105HP Main Gun

The XC-8 turret can be fitted with either a 105mm rifled main gun (XC-8 105HP) or the companies 120mm Smoothbore (originally developed/manufactured by Ruag) compact tank gun (XC-8 120HP). Each main gun configuration has a different gun mantle.

The XC-8 is fitted with an auto-loader fed from a turret bustle magazine, which reduces the crew to only 2, Gunner and Commander. Both crews sights have a day and thermal channel, allowing the vehicle to operate in all-weather conditions 24hrs a day. It is fitted with the latest computerised Fire Control System with electrically controlled stabilization of the main gun providing high levels of accuracy whether the vehicle is static or moving.

CV90105 XC-8 Protection

The XC-8 turret has a bank of Smoke Grenade Launchers embedded on both sides of the turret rear. It also features full NBC protection and optional “soft-kill” Active Protection Systems (laser detection).

The turret can be fitted with additional passive armor protection of up to level 5 STANAG 4569. This is most likely externally mounted plates as seen on other CMI defence modular turrets.

The CV90105 XC-8 uses a 105mm Rifled main gun that is a calibre Length 51. With this main gun, the turret is designated XC-8 105HP by CMI Defence.

The barrel is fitted with a fume extractor to avoid hazardous gases blowing back into the turret when fired, a thermal sleeve to regulate barrel temperature for improved accuracy and a muzzle brake to reduce the guns recoil when firing.

The 105mm main gun is capable of firing all standard NATO 105mm ammunition including CMI Defences own Falarick 105 Anti-Tank Guided Missile. Falarick is a laser guided, tandem charged ATGM capable of penetrating no less than 550mm RHA after defeating Explosive Reactive Armor at ranges of up to 5km.
